If you are going to Hikkaduwa there is a Guesthouse/Bar called Mambo's (they own a surf shop called 'A frame surf shop' actually situated in WEWELA. I am a 24 year old wanting to have fun and surf, and meet some women. The MAMBO LOCAL BOYS, as ,i found out, do not like you to STEAL the women and im talking about tourists! I took women back to my guesthouse a few times and everytime i did, they would be watching me. Then i was at a bar and all the MAMBO locals ganged up on me and attacked me, they even threatened to KILL ME! So if you want to meet some ladies, be warned!! as these people seem to control the whole area as they earn more money than the other guesthouses, they even pay the police off (which i have seen) for selling alcohol as its illegal to sell it there. WOMEN need to take extra care!!! as the mambo boys only want to get into your pants. MAMBO is the name of the guy who owns this place, be wary of him.
The surfing is really good in Hikkaduwa. The west coast of Sri lanka is good for surfing from november to febuary. There are plenty of surf spots dotted around and its an easy and cheap ride by Tuck Tuck at a good price if you haggle. You can hire Surfboards around Hikkaduwa, some good some falling apart.
I would Say Hikkaduwa (WEWELA) has the best surf spots on the south west coast because its has a good reef breaks and beach breaks. My favourite surf break was MIRISSA which is a right hander on the south west and it is beautifull, situated next to a kind of jungle. hardly anyone surfs there!!
MIDIGAMA is also an amazing break lefts, rights, catches swell better than Wewela! Hardly any surfers there. You will have to ask some surfers whereabouts the break is because its not so obvious from the road.
Mosquitos are around the south west coast, but it isn't a MALARIA area, but if you are going all around you might want to take anti malaria pills. I was in Sri lanka for 3 months and i didnt take anything and was fine.
If you get a cut or are bitten by a mosquito MAKE SURE YOU LOOK AFTER IT!! I had a few cuts and mosquito bites and didnt put a plaster on them, the cuts got bigger and bigger and now i have scars, but a very good treatment you can buy at chemists over there is an antibacterial powder or antibiotic powder which works amazingly, just put it on your cut, because the weather is so humid its better to powder your cut so it can dry up. The flies are attracted to wounds, so make sure they dont land on yours!
- Pros:Good SURF, Cheap Accomodation, Nice food, Paradise
- Cons:Violent Locals (Mambo local boys), Cuts from the reef, loads of SCAMS
- In a nutshell:Some locals are Violent (Mambo boys)

I spent 2 months in Hikkaduwa last season. I'm a female and was travelling on my own. Mambo's was one of the few places where I felt safe drinking at night - especially as I'm a blonde. I stayed at Mambo's place in Arugam Bay too, had a great time.
