Allegro Papagayo Resort: Great Service, nice setting

The service was good and the rooms were nice. It is an all inclusive, and the food was good with lots of variety even for veggies! The resort is set on a STEEP hill, with the pool at the bottom (near the beach) and the lobby at the top. There are 15 - 3 storey buildings with the rooms. They have open air hallways and no elevators. The resort offers a shuttle service continually during the day to get you up the hill. It is next to crazy to attempt climbing it at high noon.
Our room unfortunately had a problem with the AC. This did not seem to be a problem for anyone else in our group as our room was the only one I heard of that did not have a remote for the A/C. Somehow it was like our room was never up grated to the new system and it was continually tripping the breaker or leaking water. This was the only negative thing about our stay.

Unique Qualities: Great view from the rooms! Interesting beach and an additional beach owned by the resort was only a 10 minute ride away, had a white sand (but was coarser than at the resort) and clear water. The water was so clear actually that we could watch the fish swim around our feet. The resort has the largest pool in Central America, with a swim up bar. The beach is great for finding shells, hermit crabs and blue crabs, but it isn't the white sand so many people desire, because it is formed for the volcanic activity in the area and is therefore black. Not having been anywhere with "nice white sand beaches" this didn't bother me, but many people we dissapointed. Actually I thought that the sand was very fine and soft and not rocky at all. This means that it is SUPER hot! Hotter than normal sand.

The resort also has a hiking trail that is very well marked and a great way to see and explore the area.
