Island of Lavender and Stone Villages

Hvar, the island of immense natural beauty, is the longest Croatian island (68 km long) and a part of the Central Dalmatian archipelago. Its hillsides are covered with pine forests, vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields and the island has many peaceful coves. Along the southern coast there are several islets with Pakleni Islands at the western end. Hvar is famous for its pleasant Mediterranean climate with gentle winters, warm summers and many hours of sunshine.

Rich cultural and historic heritage of Hvar dates back to pre-historic times. Ancient Greeks and Illyrians coexisted here from as early as the 7th century BC. Greek fields between Stari Grad and Jelsa can still be seen from the air, and came under UNESCO protection in 2008. In the 16th and 17th centuries Hvar was a prominent centre of the Croatian literature with poets like Petar Hektorović and Hanibal Lucić. The town of Hvar and other towns and villages on the island have numerous architectural and cultural monuments which bear witness to outstanding artistic traditions.

Beautiful beaches and bays, crystal blue sea, scents of lavender, rosemary and oregano, unique gastronomy and good wine, variety of accommodation options and the hospitality of the local people are the guarantees of a holidays in Hvar you will always remember.

Actually i think my jaw dropped.....when i saw thw main picture with lavender....i really like the stone village......:).....sight....I wish I can see this......:) perhaps stay a few nights...:)

Pocasi grem na morje, pa sem se malo spet ustavila na tvoji prenovljeni strani, da si odpocijem oci na modrinah :) Izgleda, da si nasla se nekaj enkratnih kotickov! Pa festival sivke - enkratno... vredno jo je imeti na zalogi.

I stick to it:.... Stone cities, lavender, citrus, gorgeous artwork, fishermens' festivals, lavender festivals and pannacotta... and abandoned houses, my god, this is dangerously beautiful!! LOVE the restaurants and off paths!

We were not able to get to this island on our trip-but had the desire as well as your country. So I guess we will try a return trip. You did a nice job of taking pictures and the comments are very good.
