Pećine - A Seafront Suburb

Pećine, a Croatian word for caves, is a seafront suburb in Rijeka, named after the numerous caves piercing the rocky coastline. During the time when Rijeka was under Austro-Hungarian rule, the shoreline of Pecine became a desirable residential area. A stretch of grand colonial palaces and impressive villas surrounded by majestic gardens and decorated with many statues were the homes of influential Austro-Hungarians and powerful croatian families. After the second WW, in socialism, most of the villas were turned into apartments.

Today, Pećine is still an elite suburb of Rijeka but it's lost some of its former splendour. There is however a beautiful beach, mainly used by Rijeka's residents.

Mira, lovely little page with brilliant photos. On our coming trip through Croatia we might also visit Rijeka.

Kako okusno kosilo ste imele! Sline so se mi pocedile, zdaj vem, kje naj naslednjic v Rijeki sedemo za mizo. Tokrat smo bili bolj na kratko - je pa mi bilo takoj vsec vzdusje.
