Island of Citrus Orchards

Vis (Greek Issa) is an island in the central Dalmatia, the furthest inhabited island with about 5.000 inhabitants and the area of about 90 km2. The main settlements on the island are Vis and Komiza, both located on the sea coast and the highest peak is Hum with 587 m. As an army base in former Yugoslavia, island Vis was closed to tourism. When it finally opened in 1989, visitors were pleased to discover that its natural beauty remained intact.

The natural vegetation of the island is lush. Expect citrus orchards, pine and carob trees, rosemary, lavender, as well as exotic species such as palm trees and cacti. Vis produces some of the best olives, figs, almonds, lemons in Croatia. There are also many vineyards (some of which were first planted by the Greeks as early as the 4th century), which produce some popular Croatian wine; Plavac is a strong heavy red and Vugava a rather rich white wine.

Good quality accommodation in hotels or private apartments, unpolluted environment with the crystal clear sea and marine scenery as well as the local specialities - seafood from the cleanest part of the Adriatic, they all contribute to the most pleasant holidays one could imagine.

What a great place to visit for holiday! Food at Darko's in Zena Glava sounds to be something not to miss, and so does a visit to the Blue Cave.

Lovely page about what seems an equally lovely spot. Kut sounds just the sort of place I love to explore, and Komiza perfect for relaxation :-) And that cave looks magical!

Wonderful place, and an amazing cave. I hope they can keep themselves from becoming too commercialized, while still keeping their tourist economy going.

We are going here in the spring and maybe can get to Vis. You did a great job of pictures and comments. You may like to see my pages on Utah and Arizona parks for the desert areas of US. It was an adventure and risky sometimes-like Natural Bridges area.

Mira, fabulous page with brilliant photos of this amazing Croatian island. Last year we only made it to the island of Brac from Split. I especially like your accomodation tip. Well done.

Croatia is on our list. Pity about the pebbles on the beaches. We found the beaches in Greece, specifically Crete, full of pebbles. Is it possible to swim at the Blue Cave?

Can't imagine what a Beach would be like full of pebbles, we only have sandy ones.
