A Trip Back in Time

Just across Rio de la Plata river from Buenos Aires is Colonia del Sacramento, or simply Colonia, a picturesque colonial town with narrow cobblestone streets flanked by whitewashed buildings. It is the oldest town in Uruguay and the capital of Colonia department.

The history of Colonia del Sacramento is surely one of the most fascinating of the Rio de la Plata. It was founded in 1680 by Portugal and was later disputed by the Spanish who settled on the opposite bank of the river in Buenos Aires. Its geographical and political location generated constant struggles between Spain and Portugal which lasted more than a century.

Today Colonia is a quiet town that is cultural jewel and its Barrio Historico (historic quarter) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Even though the attraction of the city is its historic and cultural heritage, this is not the only interest to see and visit. The coast of the Rio de la Plata river and the Uruguay river are another attraction. Colonia del Sacramento has a great yacht port, a beautiful shore and Iglesia Matriz, the oldest church in Uruguay. Some kilometres from the city there are different places, such as the National Anchorena Park.

A trip to this charming town seems like a trip back in time. It's a popular attraction for visitors from Buenos Aires and it is without a doubt worth a day.

Mira, another oustanding page of yours. Brilliant photos of Colonia del Sacramento here. I especially like your detailed transportation tip. I must admit that I haven't visited any country in South America yet.

Hi Mira. Great info and pics here. Finished up my RTW trip in Colonia and it was a great place to end the journey. Loved the azulejos too although they're no match for São Luís!!! Thanks for sharing. Brian

Just watched "The Pope's Toilet" and thought it was Uruguay or was it Paraguay. Whatever it was it didn't look like this charming place. Looks like a lovely place to stroll away a day or two.
