The Heart of Colombia's Coffee Region Salento is a cute tiny town in Zona Cafetera, the oldest of the department of Quindío (with only 10.000 residents), founded in 1850. Salento is less than an hour from Armenia, but it feels a hundred years away. The charming main square and streets around it retain the dimension of a typical pueblo paisa. The colourful two-storey buildings along Calle Real from the main square to the stairs to the viewpoint Alto de la Cruz have been excellently preserved. Aside from the occasional car or motorcycle passing through and the fact that nearly every building along this street has been converted into a restaurant or artisan shop, not much has changed here.
This is the best place to explore nature, whether it's by horse riding along the Quindío River or by jeep to the gorgeous Valle de Cocora. The landscape is so green and absolutely stunning. You can take a hike among the mighty wax palms (palma de cera), the national tree of Colombia, native to this area. Your trip to Salento will not be completed without trucha con patacón (trout with a very thin and large plantain pancake) and tinto from locally grown and roasted coffee beans. No wonder, I fell in love with this place :) |
