The Newest Capital City in Brazil

Palmas, founded in 1990, is the sleepy capital of the newest Brazilian state Tocantins. It has a little more than 200 thousand inhabitants and cover the area of 2475 km2. The city is located at the centre of the state, bordered by the Serra do Lajeado and the Rio Tocantins (Tocantins river), some 150km by minor roads from the Rodovia Transbrasiliana (Transbrazilian Highway). Palmas is the state capital with the largest growth rate in Brazil. The city is known as the 'capital of opportunity', attracting thousands of people in search of work.

Palmas enchants visitors with its wide avenues, a large artificial lake and pleasant Ilha da Canela (Cinnamon Island). One of the main attractions is Praia da Graciosa (Graciosa Beach). The city boasts the highest per-capita amount of green space (parks, trees and forests), offering some refreshment and calmness in the city that can be very hot (the humidity can be as high as 80% in the wet season).

The state capital is located in the geographical centre of Tocantins, a region known for its progressive environmental policies and diverse landscape (ranging from the lush, forested north to the desert-like Jalapão of the east). While the city itself doesn't contain much of interest for the visitor, it's an excellent rest stop and the surrounding area is filled with waterfalls, forest trails and sandy beaches along the massive Rio Tocantins, a tributary of the Amazon.

Palmas looks like a very clean city! Spending 22h on a bus, even if it stopps sometimes, sounds very unpleasant. The longest bus journey I have taken was 19h and I did not like it at all.

Interesting tips on a city I had never heard of before. This "planned city" founded in 1990 looks a lot different from most of the places in Brazil that you have shown on your VT pages. No beaches or colonial architecture here!

Quite interesting - a planned city in the middle of nowhere! Beautiful photos, but your trip sounded like a bit of an ordeal.
