A Colonial Gem of Minas Gerais

Ouro Preto (Black Gold) lies in the state of Minas Gerais in the souteastern part of Brazil. Surrounded by the mountains, the entire undulating city's landscape is as beautiful as a painting. It's a true colonial gem with wonderful baroque buildings and churches. Ouro Preto was the place of riches when the gold rush began. The name Black Gold was given to the city due to the fact that the colour of the gold founded here was - black. The city has many extremely ornate (gold leafed) baroque churches and the religious architecture and sculpture riched its zenith under the skillful hands of Antonio Francisco Lisboa, better known as Aleijadinho (Little Cripple). The Church of Sao Francisco de Assis and Nossa Senhora do Carmo are his masterpieces.

It's a real joy to discover this wonderful city which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. City's colonial houses are very well preserved and every corner has a surprise. At Easter time, Ouro Preto becomes the focus of a spectacular series of plays and features some of the country's most spectacular Semana Santa (Holy Week) processions. The city is also famous for soapstone and semi-precious stones: diamond, emerald, aquamarine, imperial topaz, amethyst, citrine and tourmaline.

The old town looks lovely and the Easter procession would be great to see. A tour to the mine sounds to be interesting and I would defenitely want to take a swim in that crystalline lake.

Fine comprehensive texts about this interesting historical area and about the crippled baroque artist Aleijadinho. The Satelite sounds like a really pleasant and friendly nightlife spot.

This quaint former gold mining pueblo does look inviting for it's location and cobbled streets!
