Timeless Italia!

by Aquacraig - last update: Jul 28, 2007

Vatican crowds are as thick as ever!

Roma

My last visit was April 2007. I keep in regular contact with friends in this country.
There are many places of interest in Italy, whether its the Amalfi Coast, Venezia, the history or the countryside. There is something for everyone here, but Rome is definitely the capital, full of history and life within a short distance and must be seen at least once.
The tourist crowds are still huge. The entrance to the Vatican Museum can be a kilometre long by 8.30 in the morning! Get there by 7 am if you want to go in! If not on a guided tour, then go to a local edicola (newsagent) or biglietteria (ticket office) and purchase bus tickets.
Ride the bus around Rome. Services are very frequent (on average every 15 mins).
Bus number 49 takes you to the Vatican. Bus number 46 takes you to Piazza Venezia where you can hop off and see the Trevi Fountain, Colosseum and War memorial. After purchasing your ticket you must enter it in the machine on the bus when you board.

While English is hard to find outside of tourist areas it is not impossible to get by outside of the cities. See 'tips' for cheap accomodation !
Rome is full of surprises at every turn!

Within a days travel of Rome (Roma)

If only in Rome for a short time there are many places accessible within a few hours reach of the city that are worth seeing. The Tivoli gardens are unique, the etruscan ruins are fascinating also.
There is a town called 'Ostia' outside of Rome on the coast. It has nice beaches and great restaurants. One of the best 'Irish' pubs I have ever seen is on the waterfront here!
The town of Fiumicino (near the airport) is a popular local restaurant area. Food here is good and price is reasonable (for Italy).
South of Rome another place to see is 'Casino' a place of great history during WWII. There is a monastery on top of the hill here that is a must see. Incredible views and incredible works of art within the monastery.
Napoli (Naples) is a big city and also a gateway to the islands of Capri as well as the Eolian Islands.
Sorrento is a beautiful place further south, but is very much on the tourist trail and can be a little pricy.
View from "Oltremare" Canneto, Lipari

My Favorite place, Lipari!

It takes a little while to get here but is well worth it! The Eolian Islands off Sicily are the jewels of the Italian Coast. Volcanic Islands rich in history and culture. There are 7 main Islands with Lipari being the biggest with a population of about 11,000. A fantastic place where people are still friendly and life is still at a slightly slower pace.
Tourist season runs from June until September generally but you can travel outside of this period. The Easter procession in Lipari is something to see ! The beach side suburb of Cannetto is very pretty and has some great little restaurants and bars. You have to have a granita at Tano's bar! And the food at Papisca's is great!

Pros:"Great food and heaps of history!"
Cons:"Can be expensive and smokey in the cities."
In A Nutshell:"Everybody should go there at least once!"

Hey there, Craig, can you bathe in that mud or what? I'd like to try, if it doesn't smell, that is.
