Surprisingly enjoyable! Taormina is approx. 30-35 minutes by car north of Catania in Sicily. Catania is the nearest airport to Taormina. Not expecting too much I was pleasantly surprised by this lovely town. The quaint street of "Corso Umberto" is a must see for the historians, fashionista's and gourmet travellers. Easily walked the Corso may take quite a while to see if you investigate all shops etc. Every quality fashion label is available here, just look in the" Parisi "shops! Restaurants a plenty competing for your custom at dinner time ! Choose carefully though (see restaurant tips). |
| Beach below the main street. |
Below the Corso Catching a cable car down the mountain to the beach below you will find a range of restaurants and hotels. The water looks inviting and the beach near Isola Bella is quite beautiful. It is all easily accessed by foot. There is a rail connection down on the beach level connecting with Catania the nearest large city. |
| Isola Bella, can be walked to at low tide. |
Locals day is Sunday! Arriving on Sunday at lunchtime (pranzo) the main street of Corso umberto was packed with locals spending the day out. Cafes were buzzing and full of people. The gelateria's have queue's of people waiting for their special Gelato ! The place has real atmosphere. |
