One of the great things to do in Bangkok that is quite inexpensive is to take a ferry with the Chao Phraya Express Boat along the river. The boats carry different coloured flags that indicate how many stops they make. You can choose an express boat with minimal stops to get you from A -B or take the boat that is all stops....and see everything. Prices vary from 9- 25 Baht one way......very cheap!

For the first timers this is a must see. Make sure you get a guide to go around with you and tell you all the history of the Rama's (kings). The gold leaf painting of the temples is absolutely amazing. The Jade Buddha temple is a highlight of the tour. Dont point your feet at Buddha like I accidently did, its bad manners!

Ayuthaya-Old City: Ayutthaya- ancient capital of Thailand

Catch a cruise boat, train or coach up to Ayuttaya, the ancient city. This city used to be the capital of Thailand until King Taksin decided to shift it to Thonburi, where it is now. The temples on the Chao Phraya river here are fascinating. While there has been significant damage done to these temples when the Burmese fought the Thais many moons ago, it only adds to the history of the place!
