What can I say about Edmonton? I have lived here my whole life. Sometimes it is hard to appreciate something you are so used to, but Edmonton really is a beautiful city. It may not be the biggest city in Canada, but there are tons of things to do and wonderful people here, without a stuck up attitude. It has grown a lot since I was born. Metro Edmonton has about 800,000 people right now, but Edmonton and it's surrounding areas now have 1,000,000 people. It is a very nice city with a beautiful river valley running through it. There is a lot of culture here. Edmonton has been named the cultural capital of Canada for 2007 There are constantly different festivals happening throughout the summer, and even a few in the winter. We have an excellent art scene, wicked music scene, and tons of theatre. If you are into sports, we have the Edmonton Oilers (hockey), Edmonton Eskimos (football), and the Edmonton Rush (lacrosse). There are lots of delicious restaurants and tons of nightclubs/bars/pubs. We may not be the biggest or most well known Canadian city, but we are fast approaching, and there is always something to do here! The summers can get very hot (25 C and up) and the winter can be very cold (-20 C and down). Summer nights can still get chilly, so bring a sweater. In winter, bring LOTS of clothes, gloves, scarves, boots...be prepared! the more layers, the better. Since I live here, there are tons of things I want to write tips about, but it is happening somewhat slowly:) I have lots of ideas in my head, so keep checking back. If there is anything you want to know about Edmonton, feel free to ask me:) |
| | The only downside to Edmonton is that is growing very, very rapidly thanks to Alberta's economic boom. If you are planning on moving here, the vacancy rate in apartments is very low and the housing prices are skyrocketing. An average 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom in a decent area will cost you anywhere from $200,000-$250,000 +, whereas the newer, nicer areas could run you $350,000+. On the plus side, there is a major labor shortage due to everyone going up north to work in the oil sands, so it seems like everywhere you turn, everyone is hiring. Don't be discouraged, though. If you are able to research and find a place/job before you get here, there should be no problem. |
