Edinburgh is what Paris ought to be...

by BlueBeth - last update: Apr 12, 2007

Short weekend, too short...

The words in the title are not mine, but the great writer Robert Louis Stevenson.

Now I'm not sure about that (after all I've not been to Paris - driven through it but never stayed - ok back to Edinburgh), if you look over the city from Edinburgh castle the city looks quite dull and unimaginative. (Sorry people of Edinburgh but it does) However there are also some great buildings and monuments here if you care to look.

Scotts monument is quite impressive, however the war memorial up at the castle is something else!

I like all kinds of buildings and the building that houses the Museum of Scotland is stunning (apart from that it also houses The Tower, my favourite restaurant in Edinburgh).

The castle quite obviously dominates the skyline, and so it should it's a magnificent feat, the sheer cliffs on which it perch are dramatic and for one who suffers from a fear of heights I can only imagine the bravery of the men who built it!

Whilst we were in Edinburgh our hosts were keen to point out there are a few different sides to Edinburgh, as I suppose there are in most City destinations these days. There's the stag/hen weekend area of Grassmarket (which is likened to Temple Bar in Dublin, ok in very small doses and not too late at weekends), there's the real drinkers area of Rose Street with traditional island bars and Edwardian tiles on the wall. Then there's George St, Living Room, All Bar One, if you're from Great Britain you know these places, it's like being on your own High St in your own town (along with all the same girlies wearing very little and boys wearing more hair gel and perfume than the girls!) that's not to say George St is a bad thing, it's not at all. I think I'm probably just getting a little too old for all that...

Great Edinburgh tips, Beth! :-) I keep meaning to fly up to Edinburgh for a weekend, but haven't got around to it yet! Maybe this summer I'll finally cross Scotland off my list!
