I have been travelling to turunc for about 5 years now and seen many changes. People who I have met who have visited for 20 years remember when there were dirt streets and everywhere ladies tended to the fields.
Even in the last 5 years agricultural land has dissappeared as the village recognises the attraction to european visiors who want to buy holiday homes. This is fine as I am part of that, but the local Council has done little to control development and although it is not spoiling the village, it does change the feel of the place.
The council is talking of putting a 5 year block on speculative developement, as no one is buying. The village does not advertise itself well and I don't know of any English agents who now come here.
Therefore there are quite a few empty properties waiting to attract buyers and standing empty. This is a shame.
Locals have cashed in on their land and who can blame them. Gone is the old lady who pumped water from the hand pump, now she has a corner shop and a proper place to live in. It is progress but in a way, it is a shame that the rural side is diminishing.
Having said all that, do not be put off. It has great charm and the money brought into the village by people like me is being well spent and the place is looking nicer every year.
The village is kept up-market and it is easy to spot the day trippers from marmaris (sorry you package people but it just IS different).
Beers and food is a bit more expensive, but then I would prefer to have a more "real" and select place to holiday than a glitzy hotel adjacent to the millions of bright lights shining from the tacky shops that adorn one end of Marmaris
It has two sides. the cheap package and the commercial, vibrant centre of the town. take the Dolmus boat which takes an hour (stopping on its way at Ichmeler). You arrive at the Attaturk monument. To the right is the harbour road and opposite a secondary school and the main centre. here just 5 minutes away you can buy provisions at the Tanzas supermarket. Many banks line the street and to the right there is an enclosed "market" area.
Do explore the smaller old streets to the right which takes you down to the harbour
- Pros:Quiet, friendly, attractive, Blue flag beach, rural
- Cons:Council must control village expansion.
- In a nutshell:A peaceful retreat which has something for everyone
