From Hoxha to Dance Clubs The Tirana of today is dramatically different from the Tirana of the 1990s (and before). After the death of former dictator Enver Hoxha, Tirana has started to blossom into a vibrant and exciting city, overrun with trendy cafes, restaurants, bars, and dance clubs.
With Albanian citizens no longer sufficated by Hoxha's obusive communist rule, many things are progressively changing, particularly in the capital. Beautiful women dressed to the nines roam the streets. College students sit drinks coffees at one of the thousands of small cafes across the city. And the former dictator's house - located in the formerly closed off elite part of town named Blloku - is now accessible. |

| | Come for a good time, stay for the people The transformation that modern-day Albania is going through is amazing and the city of Tirana is leading the way. Note that it was only in November 2006 that a paved road was built from the international airport to Tirana city proper. Tirana is on the move now and the city is continously changing and becoming more and more welcoming to foreigners.
Tirana is also a good city for nightlife (though it could be better) and has an amazingly friendly -- not to mention honest -- population, who are always ready to help a foreigner (particularly Americans) in need. Given this, you will never feel concerned about your personal security while in Tirana.
Close to the beaches of Durres and the mountains, Tirana is a great base of operations for tourists coming to explore Albania. Come and visit today! |
