Mosi oa Tunya | Victoria Falls at dry time of year |
Mosi oa Tunya, or "The Smoke that Thunders" is the local name for the Victoria Falls in Livingstone, Zambia. If there's one place in Zambia - indeed in Sub Saharan Africa - to visit it's Victoria Falls. It is much more spectacular to visit after the rainy season (around February through April/May), because the water level is higher. If you're into white water rafting though, head there before the rainy season when the Zambezi is much safer to raft through the gorge.
For accomodation, there is a mid-priced resort called the Zambezi Sun (part of the Sun International chain), that is well positioned right on the edge of the falls. Another, more expensive option, is the Royal Zambezi. If you've got the $$$ do one of these, as you can avoid the lengthy drive back and forth from the town of Livingstone.
