Don't Go Here If You Hate Magical Places

Ha Long Bay. This place is a World Heritage Site for a reason. Unbelievable. The ride up from Hanoi was roughly 4 hours via bus [Handspan Tours - solid outfit - they arrange Junk tours aboard the Dragon's Pearl] and then we were transfered to sailing junk for a three-day tour of Ha Long Bay. The northern peninsula as a whole is a dreamy, watercolor landscape that evokes timelessness. Ha Long Bay is a big cradle to rock in, even if it is windless - you can scarecely believe you are looking out at the limestone karsts that tower over the aquamarine waters. Meals served on the boat are well-prepared and delicious. At night the bar lights up the lower level and travelers trade stories as well as silences steeped in the surreal surroundings. Swimming is encouraged and kayaking is a must. Sung Sot or "Amazing" Grotto is truly stunning, albeit made touristy over time.
