Charming Győr-city of the corner-balconies

by 1courage - last update: Jun 14, 2008

My first visits in Győr

The fantastic Carmelitan church
I travelled through Győr many times when I went to Austria to study and many times I got off when I had about 1 hour time before the next train departed. I exploited these hours to explore this fabulous place one part at a time.
This year (in 2008) I returned here just to spend some hours, to feel again the well known atmosphere, and to take some photos before heading my way towards Pannonhalma.
My favourite sight in Győr- altough there are bigger and more important churches-is the Carmelite church wich has an incredibly beautiful internal.
Inside the Saint Ignatius church

Baroque, baroque and even more baroque

In Győr`s city centre you find many beautiful buildigs, churches, statues from the XVII./XVIII. century.
Here is a pic about the nave of the Saint Ignatius church on the main square.
As you will see in my tip, the main square of Győr wich could be one of the nicest in Hungary is in bad conditions. During the communist times it was used as a parking place. Fortunately it will be transformed completely in the following years and I`m trusty that the results will be at least as convincing as in Vác.
Other caracteristic of the city centre the famous corner-balconies wich you can find also in other places in Hungary but non in this quantity.
View of the Castle with the towers

The Győr castle

Győr is situated right at the confluence of 3 rivers: The Mosoni Duna (a part of the Danube), the Rába and the Rábca. You can cross these rivers through numerous little bridges. From the river you can see the nice view of the Győr castle (called Chapter hill today). With its famous buildings and of course the Basilica of Győr is the most important landmark of the city.

Pros:"Really impresisve baroque architecture!"
Cons:"Main square still needs to be transformed; traffic near the Station"
In A Nutshell:"I love Győr!"

It is nice to be able to explore such a beautiful required stop-over as Gyor! I really loved the very pretty river and tree scenes in the western part of the city. Congrats too on your winning the VT 'hero' contest!!!
