All around Hakone - too cloudy to see Fuji

by SurfaceTravel - last update: Sep 1, 2006

Hakone Ropeway (cablecar)

Getting There

We took the local bus to Yamate Station, the commuter trains to Shin-Yokohama Station, the shinkansen to Odawara, a local train to Hakone-Yumoto, another local train to Miyanoshita, and walked five minutes to the excellent Fujiya Hotel (see tip).

Sights

We did the tourist circuit (see transportation tip): local train further uphill, incline railway, the ropeway (cable car), tourist boat on Lake Ashi, bus, and local train back to the hotel. Total time: three hours

We got off at one of the stops on the ropeway and checked out the sulphur mines. We bought hard-boiled eggs cooked in the sulphur. Our daughter must have been hungry, as she ate a whole egg. There are supposed to be views of Mount Fuji, but it was too hazy to see it that day.

Back at the hotel, we walked around the excellent grounds and gardens.
