"A short week at Coniston Water" Lake District National Park by SurfaceTravel

Lake District National Park Travel Guide: 487 reviews and 1,306 photos

We drove up to the Lake District in the middle of May. This trip was very much a pilgrimage to the site of many scenes in the Arthur Ransome children's classical book series, "Swallows and Amazons". We stayed at Bank Ground Farm on Coniston Water (see tip), known as Holly Howe in "Swallows and Amazons".

- We rented a silly tourist electric boat and saw Peel Island, Wildcat Island in S&A (see tip).
- We visited Hill Top, a National Trust property where Beatrix Potter wrote many of her children's stories (see tip).
- We visited Arthur Ransome's grave at St Paul's Church in the tiny village of Rusland (see tip).
- We visited the cheesy World of Beatrix Potter tourist attraction (see tip).
- We walked twice through Grizedale Forest Park and walked a different trail each time (see tip).
- We visited Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin, an English art critic and social thinker, author, poet and artist (see tip).
