Baxter State Park

This mountain is 5267 feet high and
is at the northern end of the Appalachian Trail which goes down to
northern Georgia.
Beautiful views from all along the trails.
Best seen in sunny weather.

Park contains moose that can be seen near the road
Entrance is near the town of Millinocket, Maine

This is a view from the base of the mountain, between the entrance to
the park and the trailhead. This kind of scene often happens
on cool fall mornings. The foliage turns earlier up here.
This was late September 1978

Nearly a mile high - Chimney Pond on the left

This is a long hike - takes all day
Be sure to bring enough food and water. There is no
water on the upper reaches of this mountain - all bare rock

Pros and Cons

Pros:some of the nicest scenery in the Northeast
Cons:A long drive from most places

Great tips! This is exactly what I want to do in Maine! The Knife edge doesn't look as scary as the park website makes it out to be, but we won't underestimate this mountain. Cool:) first comment on your page!
