Trieste is a city and port in northeastern Italy right on the border with Slovenia. Trieste is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste on the Adriatic Sea. With a population of 211,184 (2001) it is capital of the autonomous region Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trieste province. |
| | Trieste had grown into an important port and trade hub. It was constituted a free port by Emperor Charles VI and remained a free port from 1719 until July 1, 1891. The reign of his successor, Maria Theresa of Austria, marked for Trieste in particular the beginning of a flourishing era. Given its history and its location on the borders of several European countries, travelers will not be surprised to see a large number of interesting, imposing and sometimes beautiful buildings and monuments. |
| | «Barcolana», one of the biggest sailing regattas on the Adriatic Sea takes place in the first week of October and then I like to visit Trieste the most |
