Kyoto is a place that most every traveler has heard of - an historic Japanese city with beautiful shrines and gardens. Despite what I had read and heard, I was not prepared to be so overwhelmed by the depth and extent of the timeless beauty that are revealed in the many shrines, temples and gardens in and around Kyoto.

We were here at the peak of cherry blossom season, so of course it was as good as it gets. But Kyoto is much more than blossoms. Each of the major gardens has developed over the years to capitalize on the charms of each season. While we had canopies of blossoms at every turn, we could only imagine scenes to come in the weeks or months ahead: irises later in the spring, maples in the fall, or the gentle drifts of snow in winter.
