Vashon Island is a pleasant getaway in the Seattle area. Accessible only by boat or ferry, it maintains a rather low-key pace of life. There are miles of pine tree edged roads that make bicycling a popular activity. The tourist economy is fairly well developed, but on a small scale; you won't find motels and typical chain establishments, but several B & Bs and a youth hostel. So far suburban development has been kept at bay, so the rural feel of the island hasn't changed. There are good views of Mt. Rainer from several spots on the southern and eastern sides.
The island is about 13 miles long by 8 miles at the widest point.
There are three ferry boats to the island that take cars, along with a passenger only ferry from downtown Seattle on weekdays. All have views of the Cascade and Olympic Mountains.
The area is home to many artists, including painters, potters, jewelers, artists, musicians, writers and organic farmers. The first 2 weekends in May and December are the Potters' and Artists' tours. In July there is a lavender festival and a strawberry festival. |

| | Day trip to Tulip Country During one visit in April, we took a day trip over to Whidbey Island and the tulip area around nearby La Conner. The weather looked a little precarious, but it made for a nice photo. |
