Just passing through

Machelen in the Belgian province of East Flanders is a village without monuments, without any scenery worth mentioning, almost without an own identity. Machelen is just an anonymous place you pass through when travelling from Ghent to Kortrijk. And even the passing through usually happens without noticing Machelen; except from a small roadsign there is hardly any evidence that the villlage actually exists.
How different was that on saturday april 15th 2006 when hundreds of admirors and thousands of journalists came to Machelen for the funeral of one of the greatest Dutch writers of this century. Gerard Reve escaped calvinist Holland, headed for catholic Flanders and chose Machelen as his new home. Because it was an anonymous place. Without monuments and scenery and tourists.

Check out the travelogue below for some pics of Machelen and its most famous inhabitant's funeral.

What a lovely travelogue - respectful and knowledgeable. I am not familiar with Gerard Reve's works, but will look into it now.
