Sintra is beautiful, and the Palacio Nacional de Sintra is really quite groovy, with intricate rooms and a nice blend of royal grandeur and typically Portuguese humility. Check out the crazy chimneys!

Inside the palace, we see tucked-away courtyards, showing great utilization of water -- a Moorish influence, perhaps. The Moors were here first, after all. After the Portguese conquered the Tago valley, they simply followed the local custom: summering in Sintra.

In the Kings' Room, the coats of arms of all the Portuguese nobility are displayed. If you notice, there is a blank space among the various crests. Apparently, one of the noble families annoyed the king, so he "erased" them. Therefore, we have the first rule of Portuguese nobility: Don't upset the king! If you do, your family might be "rubbed out."
