I lived in Hull for a couple of years from 95-97. I loved the place and go back whenever possible. The reputation it has of being a nasty dirty industrial town which smells of fish (what a lot of southerners think) is not a fair representation of the town. You just have to look a little further beyond the obvious and you will find a nice place to be with plenty of history and a great population.
