View over Whitby looking out to sea

River sea and beach

Theres not much of a beach but there is a small one for the kids and for those like me who cannot resist putting a toe in the water.

The pier gives a fantastic view of the coast and St Marys church and Whitby Abbey. It is also one place ot see beautiful sunsets and sunrises because although Whitby is on the east coast it faces north.

You can go out on the water on a variety of boats (Speed, replica of Cooks Endeavor, and old life boat among others) for as little as £2 for adults on some boats for about 30 mins. If you enjoy fishing you can arange for more money to go out on a 3+ hour fishing trip too.

The streets along the the water front are the typical range of shops you find in any seaside town, along with the fortune teller, and amusment arcade's if that is what you enjoy.

One thing Whitby is especially famous for is its fish and chips, there are several remound places Magpie Cafe which is an unmissable black and white tudor building in Pier Road was recomended by Rick Stein, you cannot book tables everyone has to que, there is also a takaway underneath the main building. Trenchers in New Quay Road was also recomended and If they are too expencive there there is a cheaper vertion I am told is just as good further up the road past the old lifeboat station in the old Coastguard station. We just had fish and chips from a chip shop and I certainly was not disapointed.
Dracula out side a Whitby B&B

Literature and Museums

The pier also looks east over the beach where the inspiration for Bram Stoker gothic horror novel by Dracula was gained. There is at least one museum to Dracula down by the water and Whitby is also known for it's goth weeks and if you any interest and they are worth going to.

There are 2 tourist bus's that go round Whitby the yellow bus and a silver one they are aproximatly half an hour apart the cost and route are the same, and you can hop on and off as many times as you like, and you can use the ticket for discount in the Cook museum, on the Yellow bus though you get a litttle more, personalised tour I went on 2 days because I got a late bus I could use the ticket the next day and the 2 tour guides although they gave the same information both had their own flair and extra stories, one is able to get you discount in 2 shops that sell Jet jewellery. I also picked up s ticket for the replica of Cooks Endeavor to get 50p off the price of a ticket.

There are many many museums in Whitby, Vistorian, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum located in John Walkers's House in grope lane, Whitby Museum and Pannett Park Art Gallery Pannett Park (went there 20 years ago and much more interesting than the Cook Museum in my oppinion), Museum of Victorian, Sandgate, on a wet day.
