The nearest Concentration Camp to Berlin and seen by the Nazi's as the heart of the camp system - the administration building is close by. Sachsenhausen was used as a training centre for SS staff during the years 1936 - 1945 and claimed the lives of tens of thousands of men and women through beatings, starvation and medical experiments. The camp inmates were also used to test footwear that would be used for the German army, endlessly marching around the camp grounds until they collapsed from exhaustion.
