Sayulita, Mexico is a GREAT place! We went in the off season and it was CHEAP and not crowded at all! The beer was cold and the waves were warm! Talking to the locals, it became clear that the town was growing in leaps and bounds. McMansions dot the hillsides and real estate prices are comparable to the U.S. in some parts.
I cannot wait to go back. The people are beautiful. Local surfers are friendly, and just like anywhere else you need to know wave etiquette before paddling out! Otherwise, you're on your own!
Fly into Puerto Vallarta. DO NOT CATCH A BUS OR CAB THERE!!!! Walk over the bridge (in front of airport...goes over highway) and catch the GREEN bus. $2 US or $20 pesos to Sayulita. Cab will try to charge you $30 US! The bus is clean and very nice!
Take bus all the way into Sayulita. We made the mistake of getting off on the outskirts of town and had to hike in. The stop you want is the final stop for the bus. Most hotels will be over the bridge. You'll see it :) its the only one. I don't advise touching the water under that bridge, as there are claims of sewage issues in it...yea, it dumps into the ocean :( so I advise surfing upcurrent from it!
When you take the bus back to the airport, be sure to watch for your stop or tell the driver! ALTO!!! (stop) As they will drive right by the airport.
Many people question how safe Sayulita is. I can only give my impressions. We walked the dirt streets late at night and found everyone to be very friendly. We were lost our first night, and it was very late, yet people told us different places that could put us up.
Don't be alarmed by the dogs! There are abandoned doggies everywhere! Most seem very healthy and well behaved. Each day I had a new dog to play with.
There is ONE medical facility in Sayulita. When you arrive by bus, you will see it when you first come into town on the left side. Make a note of where it is! If you need serious medical attention, or ATM, take bus to Bucerias. There are 24 hour medical places and pharmacies here.
Sayulita to date has NO ATM or bank! Most places do NOT take credit cards either! We ran out of money, and the closest ATM is in Bucerias. Tell the driver you want the ATM in Bucerias. Its by a red and white building that looks like a giant, Chinese restaurant.
- Pros:Beautiful, friendly, cheap food, good surf
- Cons:growing fast, no ATM
- In a nutshell:Visit before its just another McMansion tourist trap!
