The Polish cemetery on the Italian land This place is very important for Polish people and I believe there is no child in Poland who has not learned at school about the Battle of Monte Cassino. Here in 1944 took place the Battle between the Germans and the Allies who wanted to take over the monastery and break the Gustav line in order to go for Rome. The first Battle started in January with American attack, but after a few months of fights the Polish Corps commanded by General Wladyslaw Anders managed to win over Germans during the forth Battle in May and place the Polish flag on the ruins on the monastery. |

deecat Thu Aug 7, 2008 11:31 UTC Oh, how we loved the Abbey of Monte Cassino and the Polish Cemetery. We visited it twice when we stayed in Gaeta for 63 days and did trips all around. Wonderful information which brings back wonderful memories. | ray_d Mon Aug 6, 2007 08:33 UTC A lovely Album on a place much respected in the pages of history. Thank you |
