Seixal is a city in the suburban Lisbon region called "Outra Banda (Outer Band)," the southern side of Rio Tejo. For many people, including the Portuguese themselves, Seixal is nothing but a residential and industrial city that was completely rebuilt from an old-fashioned town during the second-half of the twentieth century along with the population increase in the Lisbon area. Currently, Seixal County has more than 130,000 residents, and its main areas include cities of Amora and Seixal, as well as Fogueteiro, the major transportation interface.
Seixal's center, where the ferry port and tourism office are located, offers a fantastic view of Lisbon, Amora, and Barreiro over Rio Tejo, and it has a fantastic riverside avenue called Avenida da República and Avenida Alvares Pereira (on the same route), similar to Avenida Marginal along the Cascais coast. Pretty much any point on this avenue is a great spot for photo-taking. Around the tourism office is Seixal's oldest part, lined with old houses and narrow streets, which remind the visitors of the Alfama district of Lisbon.
Overall, Seixal is a place that deserves to be visited. Even only for the view itself, it is worth making a trip here, which does not take long from Lisbon. |
| | How to Get There There are a few different ways to come to Seixal from Lisbon.
1) Fertagus
The privately owned Fertagus services stop at Fogueteiro, the station serving Seixal. The station itself is far from the city center, so you will need to catch one of Sulfertagus or TST buses to arrive in the main part of Seixal. They are operated mainly according to the train schedule, so transfer from train to bus or vice versa will not be hard. The bus stops are located right next to the Fogueteiro station. You may also get off one station before called Foros de Amora, the station serving Amora. The trip between any station in Lisbon and Fogueteiro cost 2,50 euros.
2) Transtejo Ferry Services
The motor ferry services frequently connect Lisbon's Sul e Suleste Terminal, off Praça do Comercio, with Seixal every 30 minutes or on an hourly basis everyday. Tickets may be purchased on automatic machines or on the ticketing windows. |
