Here's to hope that the land will heal We really didn't see much of the town of Verdun. We stayed south and drove through only to get oriented for a tour of the battlefields which we had come to see. The Battle of Verdun was surely the battle of all battles. Raging for months with no end in sight. We were on a WWII tour, but included this area because it was on our way to Bastogne and because we wanted also to see St Mihiel (the WWI battle where George Patton first led tanks), and the monuments south of Verdun. |
| | A water town What we hadn't realized was that Verdun is a water town. The Meuse river allows river travel. That would be a great way to see some off the beaten paths! The town is also much larger than I was expecting. I believe we wandered through the whole town for longer than we wanted trying to get the right street out. |
| | Medieval Roots Verdun's history is long and vital to France. The Treaty of Verdun in 843 divided the Charlemagne empire between his grandsons and Verdun became a part of the Lotharingie realm between what became France and what became Germany. It has been a battle ground ever since. |

mtncorg Tue Apr 28, 2009 18:32 UTC Very fine tips on the sites to see in this area. I actually did visit the cemetery at Romagne the first time by accident - which made its silence and size that much more overpowering. | angiebabe Fri Dec 12, 2008 02:18 UTC Ive enjoyed the opportunity to drive war tours around Europe as well - nice to see yours here of an area Ive not seen much of. | balhannah Wed Nov 26, 2008 22:48 UTC Thanks for the great tips. So sad, I would cry too. Would love to go there, perhaps, one day. I used to live near the town of Verdun, which is near Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. | christine.j Fri Jul 4, 2008 08:54 UTC Over the years I've taken many visitors there and everyone was deeply moved. Thanks for putting this page on VT. |
