Lakes in Zapadne Tatry
Zapadne Tatry is a a mountain range a bit west of Vysoke Tatry. That's actually their name, "zapadne" means west. They are worth the visit if you like hiking as there are many beautiful treks there, most of them harder than the ones in Vysoke Tatry and with outstanding views. Just get a map and get hiking. Some of the best routes are a tour around the lakes (an easy trek), trek to Ostry Rohac or Banikov (both quite hard tours with chains on the top of the mountains to aid you up). You can stay in Zuberec or Habovka. Zuberec is a nice small village with typical wooden houses. From the other side you can stay in Liptovsky Mikulas, a town with an aquapark.
Directions: From Vysoke Tatry follow the highway to Liptovsky Mikulas, or to access Zapadne Tatry from the other side you must continue direction Ruzomberok and then head for Orava.
Do this on a nice weather day wtihout clouds for an amazing view. The cable car leaves from Tatranska Lomnica and takes you up to Skalnate pleso where you have to change the cable car ad this one will take you steeply up to Lomnicky stit.
The aquacity in Poprad is a good idea if you want to take a rest after hiking or skiing in the mountains. They have 2 hot outdoor pools, another one indoor with jacuzzis, a big indoor swimming pool and a spa world with saunas and other attractions, also water slides for kids.
If you're an experienced climber you'll find many excellent routes here. Check with the mountain rescue team in Stary Smokovec on which routes are not advised due to weather or other conditions or just to check difficulty. You can hire a mountain guide for climbing too.
In winter you can rent a sledge in Stary Smokovec, take the cable car up to Hrebienok and enjoy a ride on a special slope just for sledging.
There are a number of ski resorts in Vysoke Tatry ranging from beginner's to difficult slopes. For the average skiers or families I'd recommend Hrebienok (cable car up from Stary Smokovec) or one of the lower slopes on Štrbské pleso. For the advanced skiers there are good slopes at Štrbské pleso, Skalnaté pleso - Tatranská Lomnica, Jamy. The season starts here in December and ends March-mid April.
Just get a map of Vysoke Tatry, don't forget good outdoor gear and head out on a tour. Whether you're up for something easy or for a whole day trip you'll find everything here. Several of my tips: a hike up to one of the mountain chalets (in Slovaka = chata) - Teryho chata, Chata na Rysoch, Sliezsky dom, Bilikova chata, Chata pri Zelenom plese, Zbojnicka chata... Beautiful hikes to peaks: Rysy, Polsky Hreben, Vychodna Vysoka, Krivan... and many more. If not sure about the difficulty consult with the mountain rescue who are based in Stary Smokovec or you can even hire a guide. The tallest peak - Gerlachovsky stit is only accessible with a guide. Health travel insurance is a must or in case of accident you'll be charged for all the costs.
