More like Ireland than Canada

Newfies have their own culture that is quite different to the rest of Canada, with a strong Irish influence due to a large amount of Irish fishermen that came and worked in the area when the waters still ran thick with cod. The people are lovely and friendly and know how to party. St. John's is quite a reasonable sized city with lots of character and loads of bars.

All I knew about Newfoundland before I went there I'd learned from the book (written by Annie Prolux)and movie The Shipping News, so I was expecting it would be quite a dreary place with hardly any people (which it can be depending on when and where you go).

Outside of St John's the city is quickly left behind and the landscape is quite weather beaten with small stunted evergreens and bogs. I was on the lookout for moose but didn't see any. We visited a couple of small fishing villages and were assured that the water warms up quite a bit during the summer months.

Cape Spear

Here is the view from Signal Hill at the entrance to St. John's harbour, where you can see Cape Spear in the background, North America's northern most point.

Signal Hill

It's a steep walk or short car ride to the top of Signal Hill where you can go for a number of short walks, see icebergs grounded outside of St. John's Harbour and see views of the city and read about the miltary history of the site.
It was from Cabot Tower, barely seen behind me, that Guglielmo Marconi received from Cornwall, England, the first transatlantic wireless message on December 12, 1901.
