This building was started in 1896 and completed in 1906. There was a competition to design the city hall and the winner was a young architect from London named Alfred Brumwell Thomas. Built to reflect Belfast City's status (just outside in the grounds is a statue of Queen Victoria who visited in 1888 to bestow it with the status of a city). It was constucted from Portland stone and Italian marble. The final cost of the building was £360,000 twice the original estimate!! The interior features a lantern-crowned 173ft (53m) high dome as well as such notable features including The Porte-Cochere and Grand Entrance, The Grand Staircase, The Reception Room and The Great Hall. It's currently the home of the Belfast City Council. Access to this building is by tour only. |
