Restaurant Name: La Scala
This pretty little restaurant it right in Trastevere, near a kindergarten and a mini-plaza where there is a bit of passersby. The patio drew us in: clean, cozy, inviting. Inside was also nice. The food was very flavorful and delicate but not skimpy. Don't remember exactly what we had, but the artichoke bruchetta was good. It was mashed artichokes, unlike the whole marinated I was going for and saw someone else have, so you'll have to figure out how to get that one. The service spoke good english. Thought I had a map for this one, but don't. You'll have to use the address.
Favorite Dish: Whatever I had, I asked the waiter what he thought the most flavorful was and went with it.

Restaurant Name: Trattoria Pizzeria A. Spinoza
I really don't know where to begin with this place. The bruschetta!!! The lasagne!!! The tiramisu!!! The Italian matriarch chef with a pasta-stained tablecloth tied around her bulbous, heaven-sent belly yelling to us stupid Americans in Italian what she had made because that's what we were eating!!! "Non spaghetti! Mangiate il lasagne!" "No you can't have 1 bruschetta! You'll have 4!" Thank god allmighty she told us what to do. Oh my gosh I can barely write about it without getting a little shaky, wondering how much the flights to Italy are right now. We came here after the long requisite day at the Vatican and came back the next day after seeing the Pope and even caught a cab here on our last night to get one last fix. But it was closed! I guess that's when they cook for the family, especially since it was Sunday night. Oh, those lucky lucky fools. Do not go here without getting the bruschetta with artichokes. In fact, do not go to Rome without getting it. This place is right of San Pietro and you can sit outside where the kind husband of the chef will make sure you put your bags out of the way of gypsies or you can sit inside at the long, cluttered family style tables where all the Italians are. So wonderful!
Favorite Dish: The bruschetta: delicious garlicky thick toast, beautiful butter lettuce and more, absolutely perfect tomatoes, large juicy buffalo mozzarella, and huge Roman marinated artichokes dressed in a to-die-for blend of olive oil and herbs. The lasagne: like your Italian mother never made with plenty of parmesan. The tiramisu: rich, dripping with fresh marscapone and sprinkled with chocolate, tastes like heaven. Shove it down no matter what!

myriam_c Sun Mar 25, 2007 21:04 UTC We did it! A. Spinosa I mean ... Boy, was it loud! "No servizio, no Limoncello" ... I can still hear her yell it. It was only after a while that I realized it was her way to say everything was included ... Fun place! | Callavetta Sun Feb 25, 2007 18:07 UTC More compelling writing. Brava! | adema29 Sun Feb 25, 2007 12:18 UTC Why didn't you write your tip about chocolates before our trip to Rome? :) | kevanrijn Sun Feb 25, 2007 08:20 UTC Love your Roma tips. It's been 30 years since I was there but I hope to go back someday and take my son with me (he was born in Italy). I appreciate the tips about renting an apartment for the week--that really sounds like the way to go! |
