There are a few must do's in the small town which was rated as one of the best small town's in America. First is the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat, which there is more info about in the Things to Do section. Also, the combination of Olive Oyl's and Sweet P's for lunch is a must. I also reccomend visiting the Connecticut River Museum and taking one of their free boat tours and sitting in their park on the river.
When I visit Essex, I prefer to stay in a neerby town such as Old Lyme, New London, Waterford, or Groton, because the hotel rates are much more reasonable. Essex is such a popuar place that the hotels are now capitalizing on the popularity and raising the room rates.
- Pros:Great small town feel and close proximity
- Cons:not much to do for more than a day or two
- In a nutshell:A great small town for a day trip
