Hamarøya Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 20 photos

Hamarøy is a municipality in the county of Nordland, located north in Norway. Hamarøy streches over 1038 square kilometres, from the border to Sweden in the east, to the Vestfjorden in the west. You find mountains, lakes, fjords, islands, forests, valleys here. There is not to many people who lives here, only about 1800 inhabitants, so there is enough of space for everyone :-)

The municipality center is Oppeid. Other larger villages are Ulvsvåg, Skutvik, Innhavet and Tranøy.

What to do here

For everyone who enjoys to use the nature for recreation, Hamarøy has a lot to offer. You can fish in the sea or in the lakes. Go hiking in the mountains or along the coastline. In the wintertime you can go crosscountry-skiiing.

The novelist Knut Hamsun, (Nobel litteratureprize winner), grew up in Hamarøy. The childhood-home to Hamsun contains a small museum open in the summertime. A bigger litterature-center is going to be built, (construction starts in the summer of 2008). You can also find other small museums and attractions.

More to come...
