Hopes and Dreams

Perhaps as many as 9000 people called Rhyolite home sometime in the first decade of the 20th century. They filled the valley floor quickly - and departed almost as fast. But the ruins provide a testament to their optimism and faith in their own ability to build a future amidst "a bunch of rocks". And with this much still standing after nearly 100 years of abandon, their craftsmanship may have been a tad better than that of the people who built my house!

Shallow foundations

At least the owners of this basement had little worries about flooding.

Last Train Leaving

The two railroaeds were in a death race to bring the first rail service to burgeoning Rhyolite. The rails are gone and the once heralded depot is behind chain link fence, but the caboose still stands. Home to rattlesnakes and darting lizards, perhaps, but no more rattling up the valley.

This is a great page. Loved it. Love the door, the caboose, the rabbit...all fascinating.
