The wee little country north of England!

My English teacher is responsible for the fact that I discovered Scotland rather lately. In my 5th class, he more or less described Scotland as a land of kilt-clad barbarians that eat the unspeakably horrible dish "haggis", made of sheep stomach, liver, heart and lung. I vowed never to eat such a horrible meal; once I tasted it, it was actually very delicious and became one of my favourite treats.

Scotland was not so bad after all, as I found out. Scotland has attractive cities (and Glasgow), charming villages, castles, castles, and even more castles, and lots of unspoiled nature: glens (valleys), lochs (lakes), heather-clad mountains cuddly highland cattle and a rarely spotted sea monster. Historically, it has always fascinated me that apart from Stirling 1297 and Bannockburn 1314, they lost almost all their battles against the English and still remained indepent until the Union with England in 1707.

The backdrop is that it has no sunshine guarantee, but we`re not here for the weather, are we?

My Scotland journeys led me to Edinburgh, Stirling, the Trossachs, Glencoe, Isle of Skye and Inverness, and up and down a few mountains. Hopefully I will add some destinations in June 2010 and maybe January 2011.

Pros and Cons

Nice new tips on Edinburgh and other parts of Scotland. My younger son was a student in Edinburgh for three years, so I visited several times. He had a good view of Arthur's Seat from his kitchen window.
