As a rule of thumb, a foreign tourist with not much time to spare would always include Heidelberg into the itinerary. The funny thing is that though Heidelberg attracts crowds of camera-toting tourists year after year and is virtually under siege by tour busses in the peak season months, it has retained its peculiar charme.
Heidelberg fits seamlessly into its natural setting, the castle ruins on the slopes of the Könisstuhl and the vista of the Old Town from the Philosophenweg have attracted countless painters and poets, and the Old Town has samples of almost every architectural style from renaissance to the contemporary, the University library and its collections are proof that Heidelberg has always been a centre of learning, and the many churches give testimony to past centuries of bitter religious, inter-confessional strife.
The long and short version is: Heidelberg deserves its popularity ! |
