We went to St. Petersburg in 2004 - after a major event, the city had undergone massive renovation and looked like the Czars and the whole Russian aristocracy had just moved out. The Hermitage and the Russian Museum rank to this day very high in my list of all-time-favourite museums.
It was my first (and so far, only) encounter with modern Russia, but I left St. Petersburg duly impressed. This must be what Czar Peter the Great had in mind when he founded the city as a future showcase of Russia`s power.
Beside all the glorious architecture, the occasional glue-sniffing homeless kid or grandmothers selling their family silver remind you that not all people prosper here despite the obvious economic success of resurgent Russia.
St. Petersburg has regained the glory of its imperial days. Stroll over the Newski Prospect and see for yourself!
- Pros:the Ermitage, orthodox churches, ballet, architecture
- Cons:traffic, ugly suburbs, few decent middle class hotels, sometimes rude service
- In a nutshell:Go East!
