Half-timbered House - Ulm
The Old Town of Ulm is centred between the Cathedral (Ulmer Münster) and the Old Town Hall and the Danube river. Ulm features lots of pretty half-timbered houses, little canals in the Fishermen`s quarter, and remnants of the city fortifications (Metzgerturm/"Butcher`s Tower"). Keep in mind that although it is the Old Town, some modern architecture has been built here, too (a development concept called "Neue Mitte Ulm"), which makes for interesting contrasts.
This gothic cathedral - built in the 14th century, completed in the 19th century - is the landmark of Ulm and a world record holder for the highest church tower in Christendom (161 m). If you are physically fit, I recommend climbing the roughly 730 steps to the tower with a wonderful view over Ulm - it is so far above it will make you dizzy even if you are used to great heights! The cathedral interior features beautiful old and modern stained-glass-windows and unusual choir banks with wood-carved heads at the aisles.
You do not get a certificate if you climb the highest church tower worldwide (161 m) but you certainly deserve it if you have mastered the 730 and more steps (one way) towards the tower. The (several) viewing platforms give great unobstructed panoramas of Ulm and the Danube, and you can regognize many fine architectural details on the way, especially the different types of gargoyles!
The river Danube divides Ulm and the city of Neu-Ulm and at the same time the states of Baden-Würtemberg and Bavaria. The bridges between Ulm and Neu Ulm give scenic views of the river and the Old Town, and along the river bank you find lots of restaurants and cafes.
This idyllic square features several half-timbered houses. In historic times fisher- and boatmen lived here once. This was also the harbour where many German settlers aimed for Hungary or Romania (the so-called "Donausschwaben") started their journey on the Danube. Remarkable houses in this area of Ulm are the
- Schönes Haus
- Schiefes Haus
- Kässbohrersches Haus.
One of the oldest buildings in Ulm (14th century), named because of its crooked angles and asymmetrical walls. Now a hotel - the rooms feature water levels so the guest can see that at least their beds are "even".
Old Town Hall Ulm
The renaissance Old Town Hall - a short walk from the cathedral - was built in 1370. At first a merchant`s building, the front still shows a magnificent mural depicting the trade connections of Ulm in medieval times. Also remarkable are the frescoes and the astronomical clock. The inauguration of the mayor though tokk place in the "Schwörhaus" (see my other Ulm tip).
Ulm City Library
Ulms architecture suffered heavily in WW2 bombings, yet many historic buildings were reconstructed. Ulm has nonetheless tried to incorporate elements of modern architecture within the Old Town ("Neue Mitte Ulm"). It is a highly controversial topic in Ulm, but as a neutral observer I think the modern parts fit in quite nicely for the most part. Some examples are the giant glass pyramid that is the City Library, the dark red "Museumsgesellschaft"building, the City Museum and the headquarter of the Ulm Sparkasse - all in walking distance to the Ulm Münster.
This historic building was used for the inauguration of the city mayor who had to swear an oath on ptotecting the cities liberties and resprecting Ulms laws on the balcony of this building, viewed by the Ulm citizenry. (Do not mistake it for the Old Town Hall, though).
