"Sababurg & Reinhardswald - Fairytale Country" Sababurg by MichaelFalk1969

Sababurg Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 19 photos

This area northeast of the town Hofgeismar is an ideal starting point for hiking in the ancient Reinhardswald and the Sababurg Urwald with its mighty, ancient oak trees. The Brothers Grimm worked in nearby Kassel and some of their fairy tales supposedly have been collected in the villages of this inspiring landscape. The deep & dark woods of the Reinhardswald sure are a fitting scenery for their tales !

The "Tierpark Sababurg" was once the hunting ground of the local counts (established 1571), who built a wall around the vast area to enjoy their hunting, undisturbed by peasants & poachers. The historic wall - to this day - is still surrounding the park. The park - set in a lovely landscape - specialises in animals of the northern hemisphere, like aurox, european bison, deer and wild horses.

The Sababurg Castle is now a hotel and connected with the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Dornröschen", as it was once surrounded by a thorn hedge.
