Schloss Weissenstein - Pommersfelden

Schloss Weissenstein near Pommersfelden is one of the residences of the Bamberg archbishops, just 15 minutes driving distance from Bamberg. It has a dramatic staircase lobby with a truly glorious baroque ceiling. There is a small but pretty baroque chapel, also very popular for weddings. In the landscape-styled gardens (entry 1 €) you find a herd of free-roaming roe deer.

Schloss Seehof - Memmelsdorf

The village of Memmelsdorf features one of the countless residences of the Bamberg archbishops, but easily the most beautiful. The palace is situated with a view on two lakes and a spectacular baroque fountain with water shows. There also is a romantic garden maze with classical sculptures. Just 10 minutes driving distance from Bamberg, an absolute must-see.

Alte Hofhaltung

In the middle ages, the German Emperors of the "Holy Roman Empire" had no permanent capital, but travelled continuosly within the boundaries of their realm to reassure their power and deal with their loyal and not-so-loyal subjects and noblemen. Their vassals had to provide for decent and representative accomodation. This has been the function of the medieval "Hofhaltung" in Bamberg as well.

In the summer there are open air theater performances within the Alte Hofhaltung - you should try to get tickets, it is good fun.

Residenz Bamberg

The Residenz was the palace of the Bamberg archbishops which played a most influential role in the politics of the "Holy Roman Empire". Their wealth is well-visible in the Residenz, almost like a Little Versailles without the gardens. The interior is outright magnificent. Sometimes there are classical concerts in the Residenz (in the "Kaisersaal"), try to get tickets, it is a special event. Attached to the Residenz is the Rose Garden, offering a nice view of Bamberg.

St. Martins Church

St. Martin - a pretty lime stone-facade church with splendid baroque interior - is located right in the inner city of Bamberg. One of the most interesting features of this church is how the architects used "fake architecture" in their ceiling paintings, creating the impression of architectural enhancements that - in reality - are only painted, and not for real.

Am Kranen

The baroque "Am Kranen"-building near the river. In former times the Bamberg river harbour, nowadays tourist river cruises start from here.

St. Michaels Church

This church is on top of one of the seven hills of Bamberg and part of a monastery. From the ramparts, you have a stunning view of Bamberg. The church St. Michael has a remarkable and unusual ceiling painted with flowers ornaments, and interesting baroque artwork.

Böttingerhaus

The prettiest of Bambergs many baroque houses: The Böttingerhaus was built for the wealthy local merchant Johann Böttinger from 1707-1713. Today it contains an art gallery.

Rosengarten/Rose Garden

"I never promised you a rose garden" .. The Rose Garden is attached to the Neue Residenz - palace and has some fine baroque sculptures in a virtual sea of roses. You have a nice view on the monastery St. Michael from there. There is a very cozy cafe within the confines of the small Rose Garden I would like recommend.

St. Michael is a magnificent baroque church belonging to a Bamberg monastery. This church has flower and herb motifs painted all over the ceiling, making it the most beautiful church in Bamberg.
