I spent most of the trainride in the open viewingcart, but if you do "be smart" and go inside when approaching the tunnels as you'll get a "kind of tan" from the exhaust within the tunnels.

Most people come to New Zealand by air, or the lucky ones by yahct. I have flown United Airlines and Air NewZealand, and enjoyed the service and products provided by both. When travleing such long distances as most people do when going to New Zealand it is vise to stay of the alcohol and carbonated beverages drink juice and bring your own water during the flight, also consider the option to order vegetarian meals to avoid the airlinemeal feeling.

The duty free shops in Auckland International Airport are available to arriving passengers.
If you have the time rent or even buy a car or a campervan. A campervan is highly recomended as you are free to stop and stay wherever you want.
For geting around the islands there are busses, trains, ferries and domestic planes.

There is also companies like <a href='http://www.kiwiexperience.com'>Kiwi Experince</a> and NZ Experience who has busses going round the islands.

Travelpasses are recomended as you will save lots compared to buying single tickets. Even the AirNZ domestic travelpass is cheaper than discounted standby tickets in New Zealand.
