This is probably among the cheapest accomodations available in Kailua-Kona. This hostel offers shared dorm rooms, private single and doubles in the main building and deluxe private rooms in appartments down the road for $50. Their definition of deluxe means deluxe compared to hostel standards, it was a clean bedroom with ceiling fan and a king size bed, bathroom, living room with a TV and kitchenette. The appartment consisted of two bedrooms, so you may have to share the facilities if there are guest staying in the other bedroom. They do acceptonline reservations, but did not get mine, so perhaps doing your reservations by phone is the best option.
Unique Qualities: A decent place to stay if you need somewhere to sleep and shower and otherwise plan spending most of your time outdoors.

Hotel Manago: A room with a great view of Kealakekua Bay

This Hotel is an institution on the Big Island, having been operated by the Manago family since 1917. They offer cheap rooms with shared bathrooms facing the road in the old building. And ensuite rooms with private lanai in the "new" three story building. The hotels restaurant is also famous for its food, especially the porkchops.
Unique Qualities: The view of the ocean, Kealakekua bay and the sunset from the lanai on the third floor rooms is worth its $ fiftysomething. If you are planning to go to Kealakekua Bay for the probably best snorkeling in Hawaii, the Manago Hotel is a nice place to stay so you won't be spending all morning driving.

Volcano Lodge: Stay the night in the Volcanoes National Park

When spending all day in the Volcanoes National Park, and perhaps doing a hike after dark, the volcano House is a perfect place to spend the night. This historic hotel from 1865 is located within the park itself and is placed right on the rim of the Kiluea crater. They have both rooms with a crater view and rooms in a building located between the main building and the visitor center, and they are priced accordingly. If you are spending the day and the daylight hours in the park there is really no need to spend the money on a room with a crater view, as you'll have a perfect view of the crater during breakfast, which by the way is a nice buffet.
Unique Qualities: Great views of the Kilauea crater from the dining room at breakfast.
