"Singing the (No) "Room to Move" Blues" Crikvenica by Darkoze

I used to visit Crikvenica as a very young lad. It was a short trip from Zagreb back then; now it's even shorter thanks to the new highway. It wasn't a sleepy little Adriatic town then, but it certainly didn't have the bursting-at-the-seams feeling that it has now. Going at the peak time of July and August obviously shows that with age, wisdom has not yet descended upon me. But due to circumstances somewhat beyond my control, that is the timeframe of my last visit. If you like being with a LOT of people,
1) On the beach
2) In the water
3) In town
4) At the marketplace
5) In the nightclubs,
then Crikvenica is the place for you. If you'd prefer a fewer amount of folks, check out Dramalj (slightly north) or Novi Vinodolski (slightly south) and visit Crikvenica for people-related fun.
The road that runs immediately by the beach is packed with small and large kavanas, great places to park oneself to escape the heat while sipping and watching the multitudes walk by. There are quite a few Children's Homes on this road, so don't be surprised if you're run over by a gang of enthusiastic kids on their way to the water. Walking on this road, particularly in the early morning (6:00 to about 9:00) is quite pleasant. A lot of old houses and also new construciton to keep your interest and conversation going if you have any interest in architecture or homes. As with a lot of smaller towns on the Adriatic, there is a TON of money being put into housing and kafice (small cafes). Where the money is coming from..??? Best not to ask
The fish market and stores on the main drag are always fun and interesting to go into. The vegetable market is not bad either. We tended to meander down here and buy all we needed to eat; in tourist season, the restaurants were run by pirates. Eye patches and a lot of "Arghhs" would have fit in quite nicely.
- Pros:Bustling, nightlife, great places to walk to and about
- Cons:Packed with people in search of fun. Don't stand in their way!
- In a nutshell:Lots of things to do where there are lots of people doing them.
